Rally For Choice

Today I attended the Rally to save the Steiner stream at Footscray City Primary School.  My daughter went there for three and a half years and I have been involved with the school for almost five.  It is a wonderful school and even though I chose to move to another school it was still important that I showed my support.  The main reason for the rally was to ask the Minister for Education, Martin Dixon to re-think the decision to close the stream and to demand to see the evidence on which the decision was based.  It was also a chance to show that the claim of dis-harmony between the two streams was false.  There was an even mix of Mainstream and Steiner families.  There were even supporters from outside the school.  It was a peaceful family friendly protest which ended with a picnic in the park.  I hope the Minister takes note of this protest today and sees that the claim of dis-harmony was false.
Good luck to all the families who will be effected by this decision, both Mainstream and Steiner.

Choice in Education - Save Footscray City Primary School

A couple of months ago after much soul searching I took my daughter out of the school she had been attending since she was 5 (three and half years) and moved her to another Steiner school across town.  She loved the school, I loved the school but I could see the writing on the wall and I had grave concerns that the school or the Steiner stream she was in would be closed.  Well sadly this has come to pass.  Last Wednesday 26th October the children were given a letter stating that the Steiner stream would be closed at the end of the year.  On the same day a new Principal was put in place and the elected school council was sacked.  There was no consultation with the the school community, no warning and no compassion shown.  The Regional Director, Katherine Henderson stated that the reason for the closure was the 'disharmony' between Steiner and the Mainstream and stated they she believed closing the Steiner stream was in the best interests of the children.  There is no disharmony between the streams, the only disharmony is between the community and the leadership (or lack of) at the school.
The issues here are the lack of consultation and the false reasons given for the closure.  Where is the proof of disharmony? Where is there proof of due process? If this can happen to this school it can happen to any school. Please take the time to look at this website http://savefcps.org/about/  and support this community in their fight for choice in education.
